A Court of Thorns and Roses - Sarah J Maas

As with most good books, some terrible things happen and some sacrifices are made. But it’s all worth it in the end.
I fell headlong into this book after swearing that I’m “not much of a fantasy reader.” Turns out I just needed this kind of fantasy: character driven, fast paced and lacking the Victorian-style conversations and paragraphs of flowy descriptions that make me set down other books in this genre.
There are still some fantasy tropes that make my contemporary heart cringe (I’m looking at you, mating bonds), but it’s fun and makes you feel things (in your heart and in your lady parts).
Speaking of lady parts: If you don’t like the F-word, this book may not be for you. It’s part of its contemporary language charm and HELLO STEAMY SCENES that will make your bodice-ripper heroine blush. This book is usually put in the young adult section, but if your teen hasn’t gotten The Talk yet, they’ll learn plenty of Sex Ed from this series.
And one more thing: if you read this book and were like, "Eh, it's pretty good. Not mind-blowing or anything. I probably won't read the rest of the series," YOU ARE WRONG. READ THE NEXT BOOK. Because that’s where this series gets really good.

I’d highly recommend this to older young adults, or just adults. Not just because of the sex scenes, but because of how they’re played out. There is much to work through about how sex is involved in a controlling relationship versus a loving one. There is a purpose to sex, and it is used as a tool sometimes, especially in this book.

What this book reminded us of
Honestly, this was one of the first fantasy series I've liked since Harry Potter. But it doesn't have anything to do with Harry Potter, so I guess that doesn't count. It reads a LOT like a romance novel...just with faeries and magic. And neither of us are huge romance readers. I'm telling you: this series is just special!
