The Belles - Dhonielle Clayton

The Belles book review

Conclusion: Frankly, I Didn't Care Sorry But You Lost Me.

I really wanted to love this book. And I did for like the first 100 or so pages.

And then our main character makes some frustrating/incoherent choices, and then the other characters make frustrating/incoherent choices, and then BOOM here's a plot twist that makes no sense, given the rest of the book.

You know when you watch a TV movie, and it feels really choppy because they had to edit it down to fit the time frame? It felt like that. Like, whoa, did I just skip a chapter? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS, CAMILLIA? Talk about whiplash.

It read like a first draft.

But oh, it was so fun in the beginning! A really fun world that smacks of New Orleans (which is near to my heart), with lovely descriptions and a really interesting type of magic.

- Alana

Note: I appear to be alone in how I feel about this. All other reviews are so positive! Guys, did I miss something? Should I read it again? I really want to like it!

Books It Reminds Us Of...

What I love about this book is how it is truly one of a kind. A New Orleans-based fantasy world. A beauty-based society. But it's got some staples: Political intrigue, some love triangle stuff (better played than most), mystery.
