To All The Boys I've Loved Before - Jenny Han

To All the Boys I've Loved Before book review

Conclusion: No Risk

This book reads like a sweet, delicate interruption of my own life by offering a glimpse into something else, something real yet a little fluffy. A good dream, based in reality but seen through rose colored glasses.

Okay so being honest, I read this book after I watched the Netflix movie. I know that’s like a crime for some book readers. Like the fact that I saw the Harry potter movies before I read the books….I feel the need to apologize for that.

BUT I am a mom of 3 kids who runs an Etsy business part time by myself and gosh darn it, I just don’t have time to read as much as I like. Before this book, the last thing I read was Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys by Stephen James and David Thomas. And while I highly recommend it, I read it for my own survival, not for pleasure!

This book, and the 2 following books (PS I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean) are well done books that are about growing up, growing apart, and learning to love who you are. It’s as much about high school drama and teen romance as it is about sisterly affection and the coming of age decisions we all have to make.

It made me laugh, it made me ache as it reminded me of growing up. And it totally helps that I grew up as the middle daughter of 3 girls, just as Lara Jean is the middle of 3 girls.

This book is no risk because Jenny Han does us all a favor by tying up loose ends and leaving just a bit of mystery as to how things will all turn out. Which makes the story somehow more real.

So thanks Jenny Han for getting me out of my mommy box and reminding me of when I was young!

Side note for parents and educators: this book represents sex and sexuality in an honest, but more discreet and toned down fashion than some other books (oh how I remember you, A Court of Thorns and Roses). But it would be worth discussing the choice that is involved in sex, and the value of having relationships with people you trust all around you.

I only read the first book of this series, but it was a delight. Lara Jean is funny and dramatic and sweet, and her relationship with her sisters is so well done. When you need a sweet, happy, fun read, this is it.

This book reminds us of...

It's like a Sarah Dessen book, BUT BETTER! Also Lara Jean reminds me a little bit of Anne of Green Gables with all the daydreaming. And also Crazy Rich Asians - it's fun, fluffy, funny, heartwarming...you get it.
