To All The Boys I've Loved Before - Jenny Han

Conclusion: No Risk This book reads like a sweet, delicate interruption of my own life by offering a glimpse into something else, something real yet a little fluffy. A good dream, based in reality but seen through rose colored glasses. Okay so being honest, I read this book after I watched the Netflix movie. I know that’s like a crime for some book readers. Like the fact that I saw the Harry potter movies before I read the books….I feel the need to apologize for that. BUT I am a mom of 3 kids who runs an Etsy business part time by myself and gosh darn it, I just don’t have time to read as much as I like. Before this book, the last thing I read was Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys by Stephen James and David Thomas. And while I highly recommend it, I read it for my own survival, not for pleasure! This book, and the 2 following books (PS I Still Love You, and Always and Forever, Lara Jean) are well done books that are about growing up, growing apart, and learning to lo...

They Both Die at the End - Adam Silvera

Conclusion: It's good, but... Guys, it's in the title. It's literally in the title . Don't go into this thinking it can't possibly be that bad. Don't be a moron. Don't be me. The frustrating thing is that this book is lovely. So, so, so lovely. Everything that happens is meaningful and relates back to the character and plot in interesting, subtle and beautiful ways. It's a masterpiece. It just needs a Not Suitable for People with Depression warning. Or maybe not BECAUSE THE TITLE LITERALLY TELLS YOU THAT. Gah. - Alana Note: Liss did not read this book because of the title. And she's happy with her choice. Books It Reminds Us Of: The book takes place all in one day, much like The Sun Is Also a Star , or Release . Both of these fall into the Worth It category, if you are looking for something like that. This is the only Adam Silvera book I've read, but I'm betting I would like his other stuff. His newest book is on my read...

A Darker Shade of Magic (series) - V E Schwab

My copy of A Conjuring of Light Conclusion: It’s good, but... I will try to break out reviews by book but for this one I’m going to review all three books as a whole. First, V E Schwab is amazing. Her writing is amazing. The world she created is amazing. Her characters are complex and (mostly) lovable. She creates multiple languages for her world! And she packs so much in! The first book is such a fast read. Plus, I love who Schwab is! Follow her on Twitter or Instagram, and you'll see that she’s a hard-working writer who isn't afraid to put quality above all else (seriously, she completely rewrote an anticipated sequel because she knew it could be better. How refreshing!). And she’s so open about her struggles with anxiety, self doubt and mental illness, which is so needed and honestly makes me feel like I already have an ally in the writing world. I hope I can be as awesome and encouraging as she is. But here’s the deal with these books: If you just read ...

A Court of Mist and Fury - Sarah J Maas

Conclusion: Worth it This book is where I became obsessed. It’s so good. I love it as much as I love Harry Potter. If you don’t know what a big deal that is, then let me just tell you: it's a big deal. I’ve written Harry Potter fanfiction. I’ve won Harry Potter trivia. I get visibly distressed when I hear people haven’t read them. But more about this book: The characters are amazing. The anguish! The tragic backstories! The character growth! It’s got everything a girl could want (including very explicit sex scenes, if, you know, that’s your thing). There are a few things you may not be crazy about: as I mentioned before, the fantasy tropes occasionally make me want to gag. And if you don’t like angst, you’re gonna have a bad time. Of course, if you don’t like angst, you probably won’t like any of the books I recommend. I’m all about angst. Despite those things, I LOVE THIS BOOK! I read it and its sequel, then immediately reread the whole series. Then read the first on...

A Court of Thorns and Roses - Sarah J Maas

My copy of A Court of Thorns and Roses Conclusion: Worth it. As with most good books, some terrible things happen and some sacrifices are made. But it’s all worth it in the end. I fell headlong into this book after swearing that I’m “not much of a fantasy reader.” Turns out I just needed this kind of fantasy: character driven, fast paced and lacking the Victorian-style conversations and paragraphs of flowy descriptions that make me set down other books in this genre. There are still some fantasy tropes that make my contemporary heart cringe (I’m looking at you, mating bonds), but it’s fun and makes you feel things (in your heart and in your lady parts). Speaking of lady parts: If you don’t like the F-word, this book may not be for you. It’s part of its contemporary language charm and HELLO STEAMY SCENES that will make your bodice-ripper heroine blush. This book is usually put in the young adult section, but if your teen hasn’t gotten The Talk yet, they’ll learn plenty of...
